Food Challenge
An oral food challenge is a medically supervised procedure used to diagnose food allergies. Itinvolves consuming small, increasing amounts of a suspected allergen under close observationto monitor for any adverse reactions. This test is considered the gold standard for food allergytesting.
A food allergy challenge test helps confirm or rule out a food allergy diagnosis, especially whenprevious tests like skin prick or blood tests are inconclusive and there are questions surroundingthe history of the allergic reaction. It provides definitive results, ensuring accurate diagnosis andallows appropriate management. A food allergy challenge is also suitable for patients who mayhave outgrown an allergy and need confirmation before reintroducing a food.
Preparation involves avoiding oral steroids or antihistamines for at least 3 days before the test, ensuring overall good health on the day of the procedure, and following any specific instructionsprovided by your allergy doctor.
During the test, you'll consume measured doses of the suspected allergen at set intervals undermedical supervision. Our nurses will monitor for any allergic reactions, ready to provideimmediate treatment if necessary. The procedure typically lasts approximately 4 hours.
While the procedure is conducted in a controlled environment to minimise risks, there's still apossibility of allergic reactions. Medical staff are equipped to manage any reactions promptly. The benefits of accurate diagnosis often outweigh the potential risks, however this is assessedon a case by case basis.
Common allergens tested include milk, egg, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, and shellfish. Thechoice of food depends on the individual’s history and prior food allergy testing results.
Food allergy challenge procedures should never be done at home unless explicitly advised by adoctor under very specific conditions. Due to the risk of severe allergic reactions, it is critical thatoral food challenges be performed in a clinic or hospital equipped for emergency treatment.
